Correction and Analysis of Daily Solar Flux
at 127 MHz as Measured at Toruń, 1958 – 1992

ABSTRACT

A collection of daily means over 34 years of single frequency radio observations of the Sun has now been corrected to form a uniform data base. The aim of this report is to present these data in the form of tables. A short description of the observations and detailed corrections of earlier reported data are given. A preliminary statistical and spectral analysis of the entire data set is also included.


1.  Introduction

The results presented in this paper come from solar radio patrol observations carried out at 127 MHz since October 1958 at the Toruń Radio Astronomy Observatory, located in the village of Piwnice, some 15 km north of Toruń. The geographical coordinates of the site are 53.10°N and 18.55°E. Until August 1960 the observations were performed with a 12-m paraboloidal antenna and a simple total power receiver. Since then an E-W adding interferometer of approximately 10 wavelength baseline and a switched receiver (Dicke type) are used for this purpose. Initially, the two identical antennas were parabolic cylinders, which in 1972 were replaced by antennas with flat reflectors. In the same time the old receiver was replaced with similar one but based on semiconductor devices. The receiver output is recorded on a paper chart. This system is described in detail by Borkowski et al. (1975) and Borkowski (1982b).

Detailed account of observations and data reduction procedures can be found in Borkowski (1976). Briefly: An observing day usually covers about 7 hours around the local noon, i.e. from 0700 or 0800 to 1400 or 1500 UT. Daily records consist of 16 (in winter) to 18 (in summer) interference fringes with maxima spaced from 23 minutes at noon to 45 minutes near sunrise/sunset. Solar flux was measured at each of the maxima and then the values between 0900 and 1500 UT were averaged to give the reported daily means. Conversion of measured heights of the fringes into the flux density units is done by reference to the fading flux of Cassiopeia A (Cas A) radio source (through periodical observations of this source) accounting for receiver nonlinearity, actual receiver gain and antenna power pattern. Also, the so called variability index is estimated by visual inspection of the daily records. Data on the outstanding events are extracted from the records to be reported in a separate table. In this work we shall limit ourselves to presentation and analysis of the daily mean flux densities only.

This long data series has, unfortunately, numerous gaps due to equipment malfunction, human weakness, replacement of the apparatus etc. Nevertheless, due to its relatively large time span and low frequency of observations, the collected material is undoubtedly unique in the world, and thus worth presenting to the scientific community. Since, over the years, there were differences in various assumptions for data reduction, the available material (as published e.g. in the Quarterly Bulletin on Solar Activity ) is not uniform. Moreover, the published data, besides having additional gaps due to late delivery of results, are rounded off to integers of solar flux units (1 s.f.u. = 10–22 Wm–2Hz–1) which, at this low frequency and for conditions of the quiet Sun, leads to smoothing out of any variability on scales smaller than about 15 % of the total flux.

We thus set out to correct all the past data for known factors and collect them in a single data base without excessive rounding off. Results of our effort constitute the main body of this article, to which we add a few statistical and spectral analyses.

2.  Correcting observational data

Earlier careful analyses of observation and data reduction methodology (Borkowski 1981a, 1981b, 1982a) revealed that the solar flux densities reported from our observing station were always underestimated by 20 to 30 %. This was due to the neglecting or variability inherent in a few small but important factors, such as an interference of the source Cygnus A (Cyg A) while observing Cas A, the visibility of the solar disc for our interferometer, the attenuation by ionosphere, the stepwise setting of antenna elevation, the ellipticity of the Earth's orbit (1 AU adjustment) or the decay of Cas A flux. Now we shall present some details concerning the correction factors introduced by us for the purpose of this work.

Beginning with observations of August 1980 to calibrate the flux density scale of our system we have used Baars et al. (1977) results for the decreasing flux of Cas A, which at 127 MHz reduce to:

where t is the epoch in years (see also Borkowski et al. 1980). This formula is assumed to be valid throughout the entire span of our data. It gives e.g. 1.67 and 1.104  .f.u. for the years 1959 and 1992, respectively. Taking into account values actually used in the past one finds that the results for the years 1958 to 1980 must be corrected by the following factors:
1.118, 1.104, 1.091, 1.077, 1.064, 1.051, 1.038, 1.025, 1.012, 0.999, 0.987, 0.975, 0.963, 0.951, 0.843, 0.834, 0.824 (0.946), 0.946, 0.946, 0.946, 0.946, 0.946, 0.946,
(respectively). These factors were calculated for the middle of each year, with the sole exception of 1974, for which the number given in brackets refers to the second half of 1974. The last factor, for 1980, applies to the period January through July only.

The factor resulting from the ionospheric attenuation of radio waves has been estimated for the location of our station basing on published measurements at different latitudes and seasons. The night-time attenuation of the Cas A signal was assumed to be negligible: we adopted single value of 1.008 for the entire data span. Similarly, the factor due to differential refraction at radio frequencies has been adopted as a constant for all the data: 1.001.

The remaining correction coefficients are applicable to interferometric observations, thus starting with the September 1960 data.

Since the radio Sun is not a point source, there is a loss of signal for an interferometer which is referred to as the fringe visibility. In our case and for the quiet Sun (the model brightness distribution taken as an average of the distributions observed by Kundu et al. 1977, and Lantos and Avignon 1975) we found the loss whose value corresponds to the factor of 1.022.

The radiation power pattern of the antennas is broad in the plane containing the E-W direction and is narrower in the plane perpendicular to it. It allows the Sun to be visible during 6 – 8 hours daily without movement of the antenna. However, to follow the changing declination of the Sun over the year the antenna direction must be adjusted accordingly. This adjustment is done in discrete steps of 6° of antenna elevation (or declination of the Sun). The discreteness leads to a small loss of the received flux, which is corrected globally with a factor of 1.002.

The by far greatest factor comes from confusion of radiation of radio source Cas A with that of Cyg A. This effect comes about because of the large width of interferometer antenna power patterns and relative angular proximity of the two sources: the two sources are seen simultaneously while observing either of them. As a result the recorded interference fringes exhibit fairly complex features. These were compared with a theoretical model to find satisfactory agreement (Borkowski 1981b, 1982). The corrections derived from the model for the years 1960 through 1985 by Borkowski (1981b) were now extrapolated through 1992. The factors used for each year between 1960 and 1992 were, respectively:

The three numbers, given in brackets, refer to the second half of 1974, August through December 1988, and 23 April through end of December 1992.

The described factors were multiplied for each day and the resulting coefficient applied to the measured daily mean as stored in archival files of our station (values normally rounded to one decimal place). These final coefficients (excluding 1 AU adjustment) for the years 1958 through 1992 are as follows:

The corrected observed daily mean flux densities, including 1 AU adjustment, are presented in the form of yearly tables (Table 1). The year 1986, for which there were no observations, is excluded from the tabulation to save space. These daily data are also plotted in Fig. 1.

3.  Statistical and spectral analysis

Having corrected the observational daily fluxes we are in position to carry out preliminary analyses. Here is the summary of our results.

Our data set consists of 9 654 daily values distributed between October 29, 1958 and 31 December 1992, i.e. over 12 483 days. Thus we lost 22.7 % of observing days. The longest data gap lasted from May 24, 1985 to April 1, 1987 and was due to equipment malfunction and its subsequent replacement.

In Fig. 2 we present the frequencies of occurences of flux densities rounded to one decimal digit. The most frequent value is 3.6 s.f.u. (it occurred 258 times). The smallest recorded value is 1.0 s.f.u. (on November 15, 1972) and the highest one is 2741.4 s.f.u. (December 26, 1980). The quiet sun (understood as a sun completely covered by the coronal holes) flux density at 127 MHz has been estimated to be 3.1 ±0.4 s.f.u. (Borkowski 1982a). Thus our flux densities below about 2.7 s.f.u. (some 5 % of all the data) should be considered unreliable. The underestimation might be due to instabilities of the instrument and partly can be ascribed to normal statistical errors. The overall average daily flux at 127 MHz turns out to be 20.60 s.f.u.

The entire daily data set was spectral analysed in search of possible periodicities. To obtain the power spectra we have applied the common discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and the maximum entropy method (MEM).

To have the Fourier spectrum smooth and accurate we have calculated its frequency components beyond the resolution limit of 1 cycle/span, span being equal to 12 483 days. The lower frequency part, about 10 %, of the spectrum is presented in Fig. 3. It shows strongest peaks at periods of about 49 and 10.4 years (frequencies of 0.69 and 3.3 cycle/span, respectively). Most likely, the 49-year period is spurious since it is longer than the span of our data (34 years). Nevertheless, we note the existence of a cycle quite close to the discussed, a 55-year cycle, in the sunspot data (Schove 1983).

The second largest peak in the spectrum, the 10.4-year cycle, is obviously associated with the well known 11-year periodicity of the sunspots. Both cyclicities are clearly visible in the MEM spectrum of the smoothed data, Fig. 4.

Between the two, there is a smaller peak of unknown origin at the period of 17.8 years. Its amplitude falls to the half of the plotted value when the 49-year cycle is removed; that makes it no higher than many higher frequency peaks which we have considered statistically insignificant. The peak is completely absent in the MEM spectrum.

Also, the shorter cycles seen in this spectrum seem to carry little significance. However, it is possible that the sharp 81-day (154 cycles/span) periodicity, also visible in the MEM spectrum of monthly means (not reproduced here), is related to the 78- and 84-day cycles discovered for shorter data intervals in the sunspot areas (1971 – 1978) and the number of flares (in the solar activity cycle 20) by Bai and Sturrock (1991).
